The Magical Island Paradise of Zanzibar

Local fishermen

The beaches of Zanzibar are just SWILD. Paul has seen beaches on every single continent (save Antarctica) and many, many islands. There's something magic about Zanzibar. Its very untouristy. I traveled 20 miles along the east coast by motorcycle and found only a handful of resorts in 1999. The same number of fishing villages and about a dozen private homes. This won't last for long.

Zanzibar vista

There were just too many beaches to photograph. All with palm or coconut trees, a soft breeze and pure white sand. Paradise.

Aquamarine waters

The color of the aquamarine ocean is just beyond description. It shimmers in the sunlight and the colors dance with each wave upon the beach.

Local village

The easiest transport is by motorcycle rented from Stonestown. Even in this fishing village they have Coca Cola.

Carving out a canoe

A fishing village along the coast hacks out an outrigger from a recently felled tree. It takes a long time and a lot of work.

Deserted beaches

There is a lot of driftwood on the north eastern beaches. There is no tourism nor fishing villages to take the firewood.

Beautiful beaches

The eastern side of the island is very pristine. The best way to travel is actually along the beach as far as the eye can see.

Inland village

This is a local village along the northern part of Zanzibar. They have a few rudimentary shops and sell coke and snacks.
